Gareth describes his experience at the MIHP

https://shop.salford.ac.uk/product-catalogue/university-goods-and-services/healthcare/studentled-physiotherapy-service-mihp

Gareth has just completed his 6-week placement at the MIHP, under the supervision of his University Lecturers, Dale Walker and Ray Healy.
Physiotherapy uses lots of “medical jargon” and it’s easy to get your words mixed up.

Gareth confused the muscles of the Peronei (muscles at the outside of the ankle) with Peroni (an Italian Beer), at least it was not perineum!

Gareth already helps a Chartered Physiotherapists with their clinic at Awesome Walls climbing centre in Stockport and has just gained his qualification in Sports Massage.

Gareth has been learning new “hands on” techniques including Myofascial release with an Instrument Assist (we use Rock Blades in the Clinic), Joint Mobilisations, Electrotherapy (we use Compex in the Clinic) and Exercise prescription.

Gareth would highly recommend this experience to other students before they go out on their MSK Placement.

Owen describes his experience at the MIHP

Owen has just completed his 6-week placement at the MIHP, under the supervision of his University Lecturers, Dale Walker and Ray Healy.

When theory is learned in the classroom where most of the students are able-bodied the scenario can sometimes lose its realism.

However, with a “real-life” patient who has actual symptoms the scenario is completely different.

This “great experience” with patients is also “Time-Protected” to allow reflection and clinical reasoning to be predominated over time management.

Which is the Student’s biggest challenge when going into a Musculo-Skeletal (MSK) Out-Patients placement.

Owen has been learning new “hands on” techniques including Myofascial release with an Instrument Assist (we use Rock Blades in the Clinic), Joint Mobilisations, Electrotherapy (we use Compex in the Clinic) and Exercise prescription.

This week the Students learn about Kinesiology Taping

Affordable Physiotherapy for ONLY £10.

Book now on the link below:

Here’s what clients are saying about the Student-Led Physio Service at the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance:

I had loads of improvements after yesterday’s treatment and I was amazed at how quickly I responded.”

“I felt confident in the student’s ability and knowledge.”

This week the Students have been learning how to apply Kinesiology Tape.

Kinesiology taping turns down the volume on pain.

More specifically, it runs interference on pain.

Ever whack your shin and rub it, and suddenly realize you feel better?

Kinesiology Tape on the skin can interfere with painful signals which are directed to the brain.

When the signals arriving to the brain are altered, it does not produce the sensation of pain.

When kinesiology tape is properly applied, many of our customers call it “magic” or think that it fixed their injury instantly. In fact, it helps to change how your body interprets pain, turning down the pain “volume” that your body hears.

Decompresses an area of swelling and inflammation

When kinesiology Tape is applied to the skin, it has a microscopic lifting effect underneath the skin and between the many layers. This allows the by-products created by inflammation to be removed more quickly.

It delays fatigue

Research has shown that kinesiology Tape on skin can attenuate muscle fatigue. In rehab, this is very important, not only for the parts of your body that are currently hurting, but also for the surrounding areas as they help to pick up the slack for muscles that are currently not working well.

It normalizes muscle tone

When someone is injured, fatigued, sick, or inflamed, the symphony of muscle action that normally takes place with great accuracy often falls out of tune. This can happen all over the body. For instance, research has shown that people who sprain their ankle tend to have altered activity of their hip muscle as a result.

Kinesiology Tape helps bring dormant muscle back to life and help calm down the overactive muscles. It helps your body coordinate movement as if it weren’t hurt, hence allowing it to heal properly.

It distributes physical stress

Unlike conventional taping, which prevents movement –Kinesiology  Tape allows full movement of a taped area.

Through elastic properties and quick recoil, Kinesiology Tape can help distribute forces to other nearby areas through the fascia, ligaments, and even bones.

Kinesiology Taping is just one of the many treatments available at the Student-Led Physio Service at the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance.

We Are Back!

The Student-Led Physiotherapy Service from the University of Salford was back this week.

The clinic was packed as we returned from a well-earned Winter break.

Seven new students from the University of Salford undergraduate Physiotherapy programme started this additional placement yesterday.

There is a mix of students from both our Full-Time and Part-Time courses.

The students more advanced in their studies also act as Clinical Educators for the less experienced students.

The best way to learn is to teach.

The students are all volunteers who see the value in up-skilling themselves in a state-of-the-art clinic at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance.

The University of Salford is honoured to put the “Health” into the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance.

Rachel describes her experience at the MIHP

I volunteered for the MIHP Clinic from September to mid-October.

It was such a useful experience- Dale and Ray supported us with teaching sessions before the service users came to the clinic, so you felt assured before you went in that you would be able to manage the patient.

Dale and Ray were also just outside if you needed any advice or weren’t sure of something.

We learnt so many transferable skills on manual handling and exercise prescription, and also some treatment techniques that we wouldn’t see in University such as Acupuncture and Myo-fascial release.

It was really lovely to see yourself having a positive impact on someone else’s life and made me more confident as a health professional.

Aine describes her experience at the MIHP

Aine’s feedback

"I had a brilliant experience volunteering at the MIHP."

During the six weeks my practical and communication skills improved no end, and I also I grew in confidence.

It was great being able to put the theory we learned in University into practice on real patients while also having a lecturer there to support us if we had any problems.

During the six weeks we were also learned how to use some very specialist equipment such as Compex which I might never have get the opportunity to use otherwise.

I would highly recommend the MIHP to any student looking to improve their skills and knowledge.

Lauren & Her Experience at the Student-Led Physio Service - MIHP

Lauren has just finished her Physio treatment at the MIHP.

What is interesting is that Lauren is a Physio Student on our course.

It is great for the students to see that patients are people just like them.

At some points in our lives we will all be patients who need Physiotherapy.

At least we know Lauren will do her exercises!
