This week in the Student-Led Physio Service, we were using the Rock Blade.
This is a myofascial release tool.

So what exactly is Myofascia?

Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscle. Fascia supports and protects these structures.

Theory proposes that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow.

Myofascial release (MFR, self-myofascial release) is an alternative medicine therapy that claims to treat skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.

The Rock Blades are Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) tools and just one of the many techniques that the Students learn to help get you better with Physiotherapy.

Physio Tutors Dale Walker and Ray Healy are responsible for helping the students run the clinic under the Clinical Director Dr Lee Herrington.

Student-Led Physiotherapy Service In Manchester

This week in the clinic we were down on student numbers so this meant the students now had to work on their own rather than working in pairs as was done in previous weeks.

This was a significant boost to each of the student's confidence and allows them more autonomy.

The student must complete a both a thorough subjective and objective patient assessment, which is then followed by the all-important treatment of the injury.

The treatment techniques that we use in Physio are vast and the students are constantly learning new and improved techniques.

These can include Manual Therapy, Exercise Prescription (Rehab Guru), soft tissue massage, Instrument assisted soft tissue myofascial release, joint mobilisation.

The Student-Led Physiotherapy Service in February

The Student-Led Physiotherapy Service from the University of Salford continues to put the HEALTH into the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance.

Each first year student is paired up with a third year student.

This gives the first year a mentor and the third year a chance to consolidate their knowledge by teaching.

The feedback we had this week was amazing:

“Dale, just to let you know your students did a fantastic job yesterday.

No pain going up or down stairs what so ever!”

The University of Salford is providing affordable Physiotherapy to the Manchester area.

 It is ONLY £10 !
